Recently Opened Busboys and Poets Serves as Catalyst for Downtown Development
The Howard Hughes Corporation announced on November 10th highly anticipated new restaurant and service retail offerings opening next year in Downtown Columbia’s Merriweather and Central Districts. These businesses are the latest retailers to establish a new location in the fast-growing “Third City” between Baltimore and Washington.
Three additional restaurants from the greater DC area join Andy Shallal in selecting the “Third City” as the location for the expansion of their businesses. Shallal’s new Busboys and Poets location in Merriweather District continues its role as a cultural collective and community connector, valued for its commitment to showcasing authors on both a local and national level. Merriweather District is Shallal’s largest location, offering a stand-alone, two-story building with ample indoor and outdoor seating areas on both levels.

PETER CHANG - 6000 Merriweather Drive, Suite B175, Columbia, MD 21044
Award-winning Szechuan Chef Peter Chang brings his signature cuisine to Merriweather District. His newest location is located in front of Color Burst Park and offers 2,900 SF of indoor dining as well as outdoor seating. His widely popular restaurants have earned accolades from The New York Times, Washington Post and Travel & Leisure. Peter Chang restaurant is anticipated to open Fall 2022.
TOASTIQUE – 6201 Mango Tree Road, Columbia, MD 21044
D.C.’s popular boutique gourmet toast and juice bar, Toastique, has selected Downtown Columbia’s Merriweather District for its fifth and latest location. Offering a fresh, chic and rustic café experience, the menu perfectly transitions from early on-the-go breakfast to corporate lunch and post sweat-session fuel-up. Toastique will be located in a stand-alone, 1,700 SF building with ample outdoor seating spilling into Color Burst Park. Toastique is anticipated to open in Summer 2022.
PO BOY JIM – 10000 Town Center Drive, Suite B, Columbia, MD 21044
Known as one of DC’s most popular establishments, this Black family-owned restaurant and bar specializes in Caribbean recipes with a Cajun flair. Opening its newest location in Columbia’s Central District, Po Boy Jim combines a menu of traditional and uniquely-crafted items throughout the day including brunch and late-night dining. This 2,100 SF sit-down restaurant is located at the base of The Metropolitan Downtown Columbia apartments. Po Boy Jim is anticipated to open Q1 2022.

Inspire Nail Bar is bringing its eighth Maryland location to Merriweather District. The 2,000 SF nail bar is committed to high-end organic skincare and will open in Q2 2022.
AMANDA GALLAGHER ORTHODONTICS - 6000 Merriweather Drive, Suite B180, Columbia, MD 21044
Amanda Gallagher Whetzel, DMD, has grown her practice throughout the Baltimore region and is opening her fifth location in Downtown Columbia’s Merriweather District. This new orthodontics office will be located at the base of Juniper apartments and opening in Q1 2022.
This announcement of upcoming openings follows the continued growth Downtown Columbia has seen over the past year. The activity has been occurring on multiple fronts: Construction of Merriweather District’s second apartment building, Marlow; community events and cultural programming including the regional draw of Books in Bloom; and the opening of the much-heralded Busboys and Poets restaurant as well as other retailers:
DOK KHAO THAI EATERY - 6000 Merriweather Drive, Suite B155, Columbia, MD 21044
Dok Khao Thai Eatery’s second location opened in August in Merriweather District. This popular restaurant features a menu inspired by some of Bangkok’s traditional offerings. The new location is 3,400 SF and located in front of Color Burst Park. Merriweather District’s Dok Khao has over 100 seats, including outdoor, park-level seating.
YOGASIX - 6000 Merriweather Drive, Suite B160, Columbia, MD 21044
YogaSix opened in late September in Merriweather District and has been running indoor and outdoor classes. YogaSix’s newest studio in Downtown Columbia offers a sensory yoga experience accessible to all, with a variety of classes targeting strength, agility, flexibility and balance.
Openings earlier this year included Indian-fusion restaurant Clove and Cardamom and Baltimore favorites The Charmery ice cream shop and The Food Market restaurant in Downtown Columbia.
