UPDATE: Statement from the candidate:
I am running for the Board of Education to bring reason and community back to our school system. We need to put politics aside so we can focus on learning and excellence. Education starts in the classroom, and excellence is achieved when educators interact with children in “A Safe and Orderly Learning Environment,” one of the Core Values of CCPS.
I spent 33 years as a classroom teacher in Carroll County, first at North Carroll High School and then at Westminster High School. At both schools I experienced a deep sense of community among students, parents, staff, and local businesses and organizations. As a school system we need to refocus on that sense of neighborhood and our common values.
I was a Reading Specialist for most of my career, working with some of the most vulnerable students. Whether it is those with disabilities or those living in poverty, we must meet their needs. Educators will tell you that the vast group in the middle are sometimes the easiest to have fall through the cracks. We can’t let that happen. Those attending the CCCTC and those college bound must be afforded every advantage we can provide as we emerge an even better school system.
We all want the schools our kids attend to be the best they can be. I would like to revisit two more of the Core Values of CCPS. “Community Participation” is how our neighborhood schools grow into the cornerstones of their community. Families come together for the common good of their kids. That is what neighborhood schools have always been about. And finally, “Fairness, Honesty, and Respect” are the values that help us get there. The Golden Rule is as relevant today as it has ever been. When we treat others how we want to be treated, we all benefit.
Tom joins Tara Battaglia as candidates in the Carroll County Board of Education race in 2022 today. I expect this listing to significantly grow over the next few months.
