I thought I would take a look at some of the 2020 Census data about Carroll County and Howard County this morning.
Let’s start with Population Changes between 2010 and 2020 in Carroll and Howard Counties:
- Carroll County grew from 167,134 to 172,891 (+5,757 or +3.4%)
- Howard County grew from 287,085 to 332,317 (+45,232 or +15.8%)
Notes:
- Carroll County had the smallest population increase (by percentage) in the Baltimore Region (that is if you remove Baltimore City from that list).
- Howard County had the largest increase (by percentage) in the Baltimore Region and the 2nd largest increase in the state (behind Frederick County).
- The Census “Baltimore Region” includes:
- Anne Arundel County
- Baltimore County
- Carroll County
- Harford County
- Howard County
- Baltimore City
Next up is a look at Percent of Minority Population for Carroll and Howard Counties:
- Maryland went from 45.3% in 2021 to 52.8% in 2020
- Carroll County went from 8.8% in 2010 to 15.1% in 2020
- Howard County went from 40.8% in 2010 to 53.5% in 2020

My final look this morning is at Housing Units for Carroll County and Howard County:
- Carroll County added 3,387 housing units between 2010 and 2020 (from 62,406 to 65,793)
- Howard County added 13,920 housing units between 2010 and 2020 (from 109,282 to 123,202)
Looking at population growth vs housing units:
- Carroll County population growth of 5,757 and 3,387 housing units comes out to: 1.70 new people added per new unit added
- Howard County population growth of 45,232 and 13,920 housing units comes out to: 3.25 new people added per new unit added
Looking at Average Household Sizes for each county:
- Carroll County went from 2.74 down to 2.68
- Howard County went from 2.72 up to 2.77
