The Long Reach boys’ soccer team traveled to Hammond on Tuesday 4/6 for a play-in game for this week’s county playoff series. When these two teams met just a few short weeks ago, Hammond walked away with a 1-0 victory, giving them some confidence as Tuesday’s game began, but with less than two minutes elapsed on the game clock, Long Reach began the match with a decisive goal and the 1-0 advantage. However, Hammond’s Joel Rojo San Martin equalized the score just before halftime on an unstoppable free kick. Neither team could break the stalemate in the second half, but Jason Fuentes Alvarez connected with San Martin in front of the goal in overtime for the game-winning golden goal, 2-1, sending Long Reach home. Hammond now travels to Howard High School tonight (Thursday 4/8) as eight county schools face their quarterfinal opponent next.
