Board of Education and Superintendent Statement on Vandalism at Glenwood Middle School, March 15, 2021
The following statement was issued by the Howard County Board of Education and HCPSS Superintendent Michael Martirano on March 15, 2021:
On Saturday March 13, 2021, Howard County Public School System staff were alerted that the marquee sign at Glenwood Middle School had been vandalized. Where the marquee had stated “Black Lives Matter,” the word Black was covered with spray paint. This is actively being investigated by the Howard County Police Department as a hate crime. Once discovered, the paint was quickly cleared and the sign restored to its original state.
The Howard County Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano unequivocally condemn this vandalism and the racism underlying it. We believe the lives of our black and brown students and staff should not be diminished and devalued in this way. We reiterate our support for the fact that Black lives matter.
If you or anyone you know has information regarding this crime, please contact the Howard County Police Department at 410-313-2200.
