During the COVID-19 Vaccination Update Press Conference held by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball on February 23rd the following statement was made by Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano:

“Many staff members as you know it will return to their schools and offices tomorrow in preparation for the first group of students returning to in-person instruction on March 1st and for that I’m extremely excited about that. Last week we surveyed staff to gain a clearer picture of how many of our staff have received at least one dose of the vaccine or are scheduled to receive it, how many of our staff are still waiting for an appointment to receive their first dose, and how many are electing not to be vaccinated at this time.”

The thing that caught my attention with that part of the full statement yesterday was the “how many are electing not to be vaccinated at this time“. I reached out to the school system about this and here is the information I was provided:

We had approximately 70% staff respond to our last vaccine survey. Of that 70%, approximately 4.7% said they do not intend to receive a vaccine due to health or other reasons. I hope this helps.

Just running some basic math…70% responded so let’s say approximately 7,000 members of the workforce responded to the survey. 4.7% of that would be around 329 members. If this percentage holds true for the reminder of the 30% of the workforce that did not respond to the survey that number would be around 470 members of the workforce.

The numbers above are based on the statement yesterday “Based upon our latest data approximately 60% or 6,000 of our total workforce for the Howard County Public School System has received either their first dose or are scheduled to receive their first dose” (See that article here)
