UPDATE – February 14th:
Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) fall athletics for the 2020-2021 school year is expected to begin soon (games to begin early March 2021). I have been doing some initial research on who will be allowed and who will not be allowed to attend those events. Here is what is noted on the HCPSS website (https://help.hcpss.org/athletics/SY-21-spectators)
Will parents, students and/or other fans be permitted to attend fall athletics contests?
No. At this time, for the 2020-2021 school year, spectators will not be allowed to attend competitions. Parents/guardians who choose to remain on site must remain in their vehicles and should avoid congregating in the parking lot.
Of course this got me thinking would I be allowed (or other news / media entities like the Howard County Times) to attend events to take photos and write up articles? I reached out to the HCPSS and this is what I have been told by John Davis, CAA – Coordinator of Athletics:
Yes, you will be allowed to cover HCPSS athletic events.
I also asked a follow up question this morning:
One additional question…if students at schools want to cover the events for my blog or their school paper (or any other entity)…will they be allowed to attend to take photos and cover the event?
Here is the answer I have right now:
Interesting. I believe we could work that out. They would have to check in with their school’s AAM before contests they would like to cover.
I followed up with:
Thanks…If you could check and get back to me I would appreciate it.
I have offered the opportunity for students at high schools to cover sporting events for the blog (to provide them an outlet for writing and provide the community information) and want to make sure they will be allowed to cover the events in person if possible.
While I understand not allowing the entire student body or the entire community to attend sporting events during this pandemic…I am a bit disappointed that parents will not be allowed to watch their kids participating in school athletics this year. I hope the school system rethinks this policy between now and the beginning of the sports season.
I will be sure to continue to track this issue here on the blog.
Some of the sports we will have in Howard County soon include: Cheerleading, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer.
There is no way I can cover all sporting events so if you have a student in the HCPSS that would like to be a “High School Sports Reporter” for the blog let me know and I will do all I can to advocate that they are able to attend events to take photos and cover sporting events for our community.
