The following information if from a social media post made by Antonia Watts, Howard County Board of Education, District 2:
“I WANT to get back into the classroom. I know that it is the best place for students to learn, and I miss it terribly. However I want to feel safe in doing so.” HCPSS educator.
The Howard County Board of Education sent this letter to Governor Hogan asking for 20,000 vaccinations for our county and for our educators. We continue to advocate for the safe return of our teachers to the building under the state superintendent’s mandate.

Dear Governor Hogan: “I WANT to get back into the classroom. I know that it is the best place for students to learn, and I miss it terribly. However, I want to feel safe in doing so.” HCPSS educator
Every day, the Howard County Board of Education receives tens if not hundreds of emails from our educators filled with the same sentiment. They miss their students dearly and long to return to in-person instruction. However, they want the increased safety that the vaccine provides prior to Their return on March 1st. Time and time again, society has asked our educators to do more with less. And they have continually done so with little resistance because they are passionate about their calling and love our children. It is time that we do something for them.
We are asking that the state provide 20,000 COVID- 19 vaccinations to the Howard County Health Department by February 15th. Our health department has the ability to vaccinate that number of residents and this could include our critical 5,000+ instructional staff. The educators of Howard County are ready and willing to return to the buildings. A vaccination would allow them to focus wholly on the task of educating our children.
Thank you for your consideration.
A little bit about the number of vaccinations completed in Howard County by the local Health Department to date…per the COVID-19 Dashboard:
To date…from ALL COVID-19 vaccination sources :36,691 doses have been administered in Howard County (source of information – Maryland Department of Health COVID-19 Dashboard tracked in Scott E’s Blog COVID-19 Google Spreadsheet):
Given the numbers above it is unlikely that Howard County will receive 20,000 doses of vaccine in the next 12 days. (Note – I know the numbers look odd on the Howard County dashboard…how have we given out more doses than we have received? Something for me to look into tomorrow).
I do like the ask from the Board…but when the State says it is not possible…what will that mean?
