Howard County Board of Education will hold HCPSS Reopening Virtual Work Sessions on January 25th and 26th

The Howard County Board of Education is scheduled to hold two HCPSS Reopening Virtual Work Sessions:

  • Monday, January 25, 4:30 p.m. – Virtual Work Session (HCPSS Reopening)
  • Tuesday, January 26, 4 p.m. – Virtual Work Session (HCPSS Reopening)

It has been reported that Dr. Maura Rossman, Howard County Health Officer will join the Howard County Board of Education during the HCPSS Reopening Work Session on January 25th.

Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon have called on all Maryland school systems to return to hybrid instruction—a combination of in-person and virtual learning—no later than Monday, March 1.

  • “Every single Maryland student must have at least the opportunity to return to attending school in some form or fashion,” said Governor Hogan. “Our children simply cannot afford any more endless roadblocks, or any more moving of the goalposts. The time has come to get all of our kids back in the classroom, and to open the schools.”

The Howard County Public School System Superintendent recently put out an update on In-Person Hybrid Instruction. In that update he noted:

  • “Today, I urge our students, staff and family members to be patient. I convened my cabinet immediately following the Governor’s press conference yesterday and did so again this morning. I also met with Dr. Salmon and my counterparts across the state to better understand the State’s expectations. We hope to receive additional information from the state in the coming days and will be discussing this mandate with the Board of Education during work sessions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. As soon as we have additional information to share with the community, we will.”

Governor Hogan recently sent out this message to Maryland teachers, parents, and education leaders. In that message:

  • “By law, these decisions to reopen schools ultimately rest with the duly elected and appointed county school boards. But I want to be perfectly clear: I will do everything I possibly can to give all of our children the chance to get back into the classrooms.”

Anyone else notice the difference between the 25th and 26th? The 25th is a report and the work session…the 26th is the work session and ACTION. Does this mean a decision could be made on this date? Maybe. Be sure to tune in to these sessions online here:
