Howard County General Hospital offers virtual health education

Howard County General Hospital will offer virtual classes and educational opportunities in diabetes self-management, mental health and childbirth and infant care.

Living Well with Diabetes is a free, six-week virtual workshop presenting diabetes self-management skills using an interactive group approach for people with diabetes or prediabetes and caregivers. Participants will learn goal setting and stress management, glucose monitoring, skin and foot care, techniques to cope with feelings of frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, skills to communicate more effectively with family, friends and health professionals and appropriate exercise and nutrition for diabetics. Classes will take place on Thursdays, Jan. 28 to March 4, from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

Mental Health First Aid for Adults will prepare participants to help someone experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge in a self-paced online course before participating in an instructor-led class using Zoom. Class cost is free and includes a digital manual. Classes will take place on Friday, March 12 or May 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Opportunities for new parents

New Moms’ Online Support Group provides opportunity for moms with babies up to five months old to share their experiences, meet virtually for support and referrals and discuss parenting topics. The group is free to attend and will hold online meetings on Mondays from Jan. 18 to March 8 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Tuesdays from Jan. 19 to March 9 or March 23 to May 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Empower: Supporting Positive Parenting for Substance-exposed Newborns will support mothers learning to console babies experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome. The instructor-led virtual course will provide answers to questions and empower families to care for babies through the withdrawal period and collaborate with health care professionals for the best possible outcome. Classes will take place on Jan. 27, Feb. 24 or March 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
