Below are the weekly tracking charts in Howard County and Maryland I have been working on for some time now and some comments on the data this week. If interested in the data behind the charts I have this handy Google Sheet with the specifics of the data noted on the graphs in this article.
Here are the weekly tracking charts looking at the total number of reported cases in Maryland and Howard County:
Note – We saw an uptick in new cases across the state and a slight downtick here locally over the past week. If you look at the past eight weeks the numbers have really remained pretty consistent.
Here are the weekly tracking charts of the number of deaths in Maryland and in Howard County (I still believe that this should be a critical metric to watch closely going forward):
Note – The was a slight uptick in the number of deaths over the past week…but remained below 40 for the week.
Howard County reported 1 death due to COVID-19 over the past week and also removed a death noted perviously related to COVID-19…so the total number did not change from last week.
Here is the weekly tracking chart of hospitalizations (“ever hospitalized”) in Maryland:
Note – The number of Hospitalizations “ever hospitalized” went up again over the past week (this is two consecutive weeks of rising numbers). Similar to new cases these numbers have been pretty steady for eight weeks now….but will be something to watch closely next week to see if the numbers continue to rise.
Here is the weekly tracking numbers for new ICU and Acute Hospital Beds for COVID-19, Currently in Use:
Note – this tracking has been noted as critical for Maryland. The number of “beds in use” had a big increase over the past week across the state (we saw the number of beds in use exceed 400 at one point this week). The numbers dropped over the past couple of days but for the week still way up.
Here in Howard County we also saw increased of beds in use…as we are again well over 10 beds in use today. (Note – at 12:03pm on October 10th the latest numbers for ICU beds in use has not been updated from the Howard County Health Department so I am using that number from October 8th).
Hopefully these are not the new trends and just a one week jump.
Here is the weekly tracking of number of people tested weekly across the state (looking at positive cases and people testing negative):
Note – Total testing (as I am tracking it by persons testing positive and persons testing negative) went slightly above 70,000 over the past week across the state. Testing level seems pretty consistent over the past four weeks.
People testing positive (as I am tracking it by persons testing positive and persons testing negative) remained above 5% (for the second week). This remains an important metric many people are watching closely. Looking at the charts the numbers seem pretty steady since late June bouncing between 4.13% and 6.54%.

I have a Google spreadsheet for tracking some of the daily Maryland and Howard County numbers and my weekly numbers: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OVZO0oIaEC__KXZ9LwtnhawO1NhdqE78VJ9Hd5LCQ0k/edit?usp=sharing
Note: Daily COVID-19 updates going forward will only happen when something significant needs to be reported during the week. Weekly weekend charts will continue to happen on Saturday or Sunday (depending on my schedule and the timing of the release of the information).
