Only Community College in Nation to Receive Recognition Every Year Possible

Howard Community College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey released today by The Great Colleges to Work For® program. HCC has received the honor for 12 consecutive years, making it the only community college to be recognized every year that community colleges have been eligible for the award.

The results, which will appear this week in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 221 community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities. Only 79 institutions were selected as Great Colleges to Work For, which includes only 25 community colleges. Additionally, HCC received special recognition this year for its success in the category of facilities, workspace and security.

“Twelve years of the Great Colleges to Work For award is recognition of the quality and dedication of the faculty, staff, and trustees of Howard Community College, who have been tested like never before during this global pandemic. Everyone has remained committed to our shared mission of providing pathways to success.,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of HCC. “Together, we have created a caring and supportive culture that serves students, even in this remote and online environment.”

The Great Colleges to Work For® program is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. This national program recognizes colleges and universities that receive top ratings from employees on their workplace practices and policies.

The awards are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional questionnaire that captured employment data and workplace policies, and a survey administered to a random sample of HCC faculty and staff. The primary factor in determining whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. ModernThink, a research and consulting leader in workplace issues, administered the survey and analyzed the results.

“This year’s list of recognized institutions in the Great Colleges to Work For® program was united in their commitment to organization culture, even in the face of a worldwide pandemic. They stand apart in their recognition that workplace culture can actually be a roadmap for navigating uncertainty.” said Rich Boyer, senior consultant at ModernThink.
