Private First Class Mitchell Joseph Lowery, age 29, an off- duty Hyattsville police officer, was indicted by a Howard County Grand Jury on September 2nd on seven counts of first-degree assault and one count of use of a handgun during the commission of a crime of violence.
The charges stem from a July 13, 2020, incident that took place at around 6:30pm at an apartment complex in the 12000 block of Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia, Maryland. It is alleged that PFC Lowery, who was off duty at the time of the incident, engaged in an argument with a group of teenagers at the apartment complex’s pool that day. It is alleged that during the argument, Lowery brandished a handgun to the teenagers.
Howard County authorities notified Hyattsville Police that they were investigating an alleged assault involving PFC Lowery. As a result, the Hyattsville Police Department immediately suspended Lowery.
An initial hearing for Lowery is scheduled in Howard County Circuit Court on Friday, October 16, 2020.
Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.
