Some of the COVID-19 numbers are on the rise here in Maryland and Howard County so I thought this would be another good week for my weekly charts.
Here is the weekly tracking chart looking at the total number of reported cases in Maryland and Howard County:
Note – Maryland has seen the number of new cases over a week increased again. Much of the recent new cases increase is due to increases in testing (see below).
Here are the weekly tracking charts of the number of deaths in Maryland and in Howard County (I still believe that this should be a critical metric to watch closely going forward):
Note – the number of deaths over a week due to COVID-19 continues to trend down which is a wonderful thing to see and hopefully those numbers continue to track down.
Here is the weekly tracking chart of hospitalizations (“ever hospitalized”) in Maryland:
Note – like the number of cases has trended up over the past few weeks so has the number of people “ever hospitalized”. This is another trend to watch closely going forward.
Here is the weekly tracking numbers for new ICU and Acute Hospital Beds for COVID-19, Currently in Use:
Note – this tracking has been noted as critical for Maryland. We have seen our first increase in bed use in months at the state level. In Howard County numbers had decreased for four weeks but an increase was seen here as well.
Here is the weekly tracking of number of people tested weekly across the state:
Note – Testing was at an all time high over the past week. Obviously that is why we are seeing an increase in number of new cases. The percent positive remains around the 5% range over the past 5 weeks. That is the number I am watching.
Testing here in Howard County is at an all time high:
Note – Howard County Health Department is now reporting a 7 day rolling average of 1,147 tests per day…well above the goals of HoCo Rise.
Overall the numbers in Maryland are significantly better than many other states but the slight up tick on some of the charts above is something to watch.
Here are important links with data on Coronavirus (COVID-19) numbers:
Here is a site to watch for information on Maryland cases: https://phpa.health.maryland.gov/Pages/Novel-coronavirus.aspx

A local blog reader has put together this really great and informative Google spreadsheet with some great data. Be sure to give it a look daily: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19a2ACAQVz_Vi2UIcD-byZXKttTmUd8js6-kd3qLO-Ac/edit#gid=280098391. Note – it looks like the county data stopped updating in the spreadsheet on June 21st but there is still good historical state data that remains up to date.
Note: Daily COVID-19 updates going forward will happen on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (unless something significant needs to be reported on the other days) during the week. Weekly weekend charts will continue to happen when there are significant items to review.
