The Howard County Board of Education voted this evening to appoint a new Howard County Public School System Ethics Panel. Here is information that has been posted this evening (see the item under the consent agenda):

This report recommends the appointment of five individuals to the Board’s Ethics Panel, effective July 1, 2020. Board Chair Mavis Ellis appointed Dr. Chao Wu and Ms. Sabina Taj to serve on the Board’s screening committee. Due to conflicts in scheduling that arose during the process, Ms. Jennifer Mallo assumed Dr. Wu’s position on the committee. Ms. Mallo and Ms. Taj were assisted in this process by Mr. Mark Blom, General Counsel, and Ms. Sandy Saval, Human Resources Business Partner. Seventeen individuals applied for these appointments. Twelve of the applicants were selected for an interview, based on screening by Ms. Taj, Ms. Mallo, and Dr. Wu. An interview committee comprising Ms. Taj, Ms. Mallo, Ms. Saval, and Mr. Blom interviewed these twelve candidates in a structured process, and is recommending the following individuals for appointment to the Ethics Panel:

  • Mr. Dean Christmon
  • Mr. Barry Frieman
  • Mr. J. Khalid Hargrove
  • Ms. Ellen Kwan Lewis
  • Ms. Camilla McFarlane

The Committee thanks all of the citizens who applied for this important position. Each candidate possessed important skills and abilities that would have undoubtedly served the Board of Education. We remain indebted to the talented and dedicated citizens of the County who help the school board on a regular basis.
