Candidates running for Howard County Board of Education in the 2020 Primary have spent more than $100,000 on campaign expenses. I thought it would be fun to see which candidates have spent the most money leading into the June 2nd Primary. Here are the top five spenders per the latest campaign finance reports:

1. Sezin Palmer (District. 4): $24,036.93 spent

2. Yun Lu (District 5): $18,630.15 spent

3. Jen Mallo (District 4): $14,170.60 spent

4. Saif Rehman (District 5): $11,877.26 spent

5. Larry Pretlow (District 2): $9,554.67 spent

Here is a summary look at expenditures noted on the campaign finance reports for all candidates:

A quick review of the campaign finance reports from January, April and May on what these candidates spent the most money on was not a big surprise:

  • Mailers
  • Yard Signs
  • Swag / Giveaway Items
  • Online Advertising
  • Printing Services

According to the latest campaign finance reports there is around $40,000 cash on hand for candidates in districts 2, 3, 4 and 5…so much more spending will be happening between now and the Primary on June 2nd. We will not know how much money is spent down the stretch until 8/25/2020 (when the next campaign finance reports are due).
