I am nearing the completion of my one on one podcast interviews with Howard County Board of Education candidates running in districts 2, 3, 4 and 5 (11 of 14 podcast interview completed). I am working to schedule the final 3 interviews this weekend.

My next go around with HoCoBOE candidates will be to invite them to a debate type interview over Zoom. Here are some initial notes on what these debates may look like:

Scott E’s Blog HoCoBOE Debate Rules Idea

2 person debate: 4 questions

Question to candidate A – 2 minutes to answer

Candidate B gets a 2 minute answer to the same question

Candidate A has the opportunity to reply

  • If candidate A chooses to reply then they get 1 minute to reply
    • Candidate B gets the final reply 1 minute (if they choose to reply)
  • If candidate A chooses not to reply to we move on to the next question

The process repeats for the other questions alternating between candidates who gets to answer first

Candidates will get 2 minutes for closing comments at the end of the debate

3 person debate: 3 questions

Question to candidate A – 2 minutes to answer

Candidate B and candidate C gets a 2 minute answer to the same question

Candidates have the opportunity to reply

  • If candidate A chooses to reply then they get 1 minute to reply
    • Candidate B and candidate C gets the opportunity to reply 1 minute (if they choose to reply)
  • If candidates A and B choose not to reply to we move on to the next question

All debates will be held via Zoom video conferencing

Debate will be live streamed to Scott E’s Blog Facebook page for the public to watch

The public will be encouraged to ask questions and one or more of those questions may be used in the debate

My proposed line up:

D1 – Delmont-Small vs Molyett

D2 – All 3 candidates will be invited

D3 – All 3 candidates will be invited

D4 – 2 sessions of 2 candidate chosen at random (drawing names from a hat)

D5 – 2 sessions of 2 candidates chosen at random (drawing names from a hat)

At this point I have not reached out to all of the candidates about this idea (I have been waiting to finish all of the one on one podcast interviews first) but thought I would put this idea out to the community to get your feedback.

Let me know what you think of the idea or any additional suggestions in the comments or send me an email at scott@scotteblog.com.

  1. Yea yea. As long as you dont start playing to the candidates and avoid the tough questions im all for it. People have become too sophisticated (cynical) for the staged televised “debates” on mainstream media.
So where will the questions come from? Will your loyal reader’s questions be randomly picked to be asked to these officials? That now gets exciting and interactive. While you are on it, let me propose my question. District 4- Coombs. What do you tell voters who feel like you cried crocodile tears during the 2019 BOE redistricting closed door re-vote only to revote the same 2 months later?
