Today is a big day in national politics…the Iowa Caucuses happen today. The 2020 Iowa Democratic caucuses will take place on Monday, February 3, 2020, as the first nominating contest in the Democratic Party presidential primaries for the 2020 presidential election. The Iowa caucuses are a closed caucus, with Iowa awarding 49 delegates, of which 41 are pledged delegates allocated on the basis of the results of the caucuses. The remaining 8 National Convention delegates consist of 8 unpledged PLEO delegates:
- 5 Democratic National Committee members.
- 3 Members of Congress (0 Senators and 3 Representatives).
These 8 delegates and will go to the Democratic National Convention officially “Unpledged”.
Current polling shows this to be a close race at the top….with Sanders, Biden, Buttigieg and Warren leading the way (per Real Clear Politics):
Others noted in the polling data hoping for a strong showing today include:
My prediction for today: Sanders. I can see any of the top four coming out of today with the win but my gut tells me that Sanders might have enough momentum to come out on top today. (I am good making predictions at the national level…something I do not do at the local level).
This is something I will keep an eye on tonight.
Other important dates in February include:
- February 11: New Hampshire primary (24 delegates)
- February 22: Nevada Democratic caucus (36 delegates)
- February 29: South Carolina Democratic primary (54 delegates)
