Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is again pushing for Maryland to start schools after Labor Day. He has serious support across the state for this idea. Heck…even when this was shot down a year ago only SOME jurisdictions switched their school year back to before Labor Day (Howard County was one of those jurisdictions)

Another local blogger has decided to jump in on this discussion…so I thought I would do the same.

Now look…my kid is now 20 (nearly 21) so this is no longer my issue directly. That being said…I support the Governor and this idea. Either start schools in early August (like they do in the south to get kids ready for football) or start after Labor Day and not mess up the calendar.

Between holidays and “professional days”…does it not feel like the school week is 4 days a week regularly? Heck, look at the school calendar last week…kids in high school had half days Wednesday through Friday and Monday off.

I very much support teachers and their professional development…but I remember what child care was like when my kid was young and in this school system…and I know what the calendar looks like today.

I know the kids love it…but is it the best schedule for our kids? I do not know…but looking for input from our community. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

It seems HoCo Bd of Ed does the opposite of what the majority of the HoCo citizens want.
(ie, school schedule, re-districting, budget, etc)

I don’t have a stake in the outcome. My kids are grown and out of HoCo schools.

What bothers me is that elected officials (local & state) do what they want, ignoring what the majority want. They basically say ” we know what is best for the citizens.”

  2. Its nice to have 2 full months to plan vacations. Why start before the holiday- the teachers are not ready and neither are the students. It’s still summer! It’s still time to do fun stuff and relax! They don’t get anything done at all knowing the holiday is coming up and school will be out for a long weekend. I hate when people say that Hogan is just doing it for the businesses in Ocean City. Heck, not everyone goes there for vacation. We don’t allow kids to be kids this day and age- at least lets try by giving them a big chunk of time off. They need to focus when then go back in September..

  3. How about passing legislation to keep there from being 55 half days and 3 weeks of “teacher work days” each school year?

  4. Summer activities shut down when the college kids go back to campus at the end of August.

Any school district that wants to can start after Labor Day.

Does Hogan really have nothing else to do than beat this issue to death?
