Statement of Howard County Executive Calvin Ball Regarding Candidacy for the House of Representatives for the 7th Congressional District

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball released the following statement regarding speculation of his candidacy for the 7th Congressional District:

“Having lived in the 7th Congressional District my entire life, first as a young man in Baltimore County and currently raising my family with my wife in Howard County, I have seen the importance of a strong voice in that seat for our community. The loss of a beloved friend and leader in Congressman Elijah Cummings has left a void in our hearts and in the soul of our country.

I am honored to be mentioned as a candidate for the upcoming special election.  However, my focus remains on my current role as your Howard County Executive. We have made incredible progress on some of my top priorities. With your help, we will continue to invest in policy and initiatives that prepare ready and successful students, cultivate a more sustainable environment, build more reliable and accessible infrastructure and foster a prosperous business environment.

I will not run to succeed my dear friend and mentor Congressman Elijah Cummings. I am certain our community will elect someone with the strength, energy, and dedication needed to continue his work serving the 7th district and our country.”

Howard County Executive Ball would have made an excellent candidate for this seat…but I am not surprised at the announcement that he will not seek this seat in the upcoming special election.

Eight more days until the filing deadline…it will be interesting to see who does now get into the race now that Maya R. Cummings has announced that she will run for the seat.
