The following was posted by Howard County Board of Education Member Vicky Cutroneo:

This is excellent news…many people in the community were in favor of this and it is good to see the HoCoBOE take this issue on early on in their work sessions.

Of course the downside of this will be the costs associated with it…because it could be a hefty increase in transportation costs for HCPSS depending on the final approved plan.

Now there is another story out there not being discussed much today…“Move to keep current walkers as defined by policy to remain as walkers” failed by a vote of 3 to 4. Here is the vote on both issues:

On the walker issue:

Voting Yea: Vicky Cutroneo, Christina Delmont-Small, Chao Wu
Voting Nay: Kirsten A Coombs, Mavis Ellis, Jennifer Mallo, Sabina Taj

It did sound like they may talk about this again…and personally I hope they do so in future meetings. I am betting many will not be thrilled about this decision last night.

You can watch the discussions from last night here:

Additional work sessions that are on the schedule:

  • Monday, October 28, 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 30, 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 5, 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 12, 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 14, 6:30 p.m.
  • Monday, November 18, 6:30 p.m. Preliminary decision

Then we will get a final vote on the plan on November 21st.

  1. In addition, the next two work sessions are set to do High School boundary review, starting in the east first.
