NEWS RELEASE: Police to kick-off National Night Out Aug. 6 in Long Reach; over 35 community parties scheduled county-wide
Police officers and members of the community are joining forces tomorrow, Aug. 6, for National Night Out, an evening of events intended to generate participation and support for local crime prevention activities.
Parties will kick off at 6 p.m. in Long Reach Village Center (8775 Cloudleap Court, Columbia) where Police Chief Lisa Myers, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and Howard County Council Chair Christiana Mercer Rigby, Howard County Council Vice Chair Opel Jones and Congressman John P. Sarbanes will welcome community members to the event.
“National Night Out is demonstration of the department’s strong partnership with our community, one that we experience day in day out,” said Chief Myers. “We invite residents to join us, either by attending the kick-off in Long Reach, a block party in their community, or by simply turning their porch light on.”
The kick-off event in Long Reach will feature live bands, a DJ, child-friendly activities, corn hole, a face painter, photo booth, balloon animal artist, food trucks and displays from local businesses. The police command post, a fire truck, police display vehicles, McGruff the Crime Dog, and other entertainment will also be available.
In preparing for National Night Out, the police department has helped residents organize over 35 neighborhood block parties throughout the county. Police personnel and mascots, as well as partners from Maryland State Police, Howard County Sheriff’s Office and Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, will visit neighborhood parties throughout the county, including patrol officers, K-9s, a SWAT vehicle, volunteer auxiliary officers and more.
