NEWS RELEASE: Police arrest murder suspect Rane Dellinger in North Carolina
Homicide suspect Rane Dellinger, 20, of Ellicott City, was arrested this morning in North Carolina nearly 30 hours after he ran from the scene of the shooting death of Jacob Mauer, 20, of Ellicott City.
Through investigation, detectives followed leads that Dellinger may be in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Local police located Dellinger in a vehicle this morning and took him into custody without incident.
The June 1 shooting occurred in the 4200 block of Montgomery Road in Ellicott City just before 10 p.m. Detectives believe Mauer, Dellinger and a friend were sitting in a car parked behind a building using drugs. Police believe Dellinger fired a single shot which struck Mauer, and then fled. Mauer was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Dellinger is charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony and illegal possession of a handgun. Howard County police are working with North Carolina authorities to arrange his extradition back to Maryland.
