On April 25th the Howard County Democratic Party posted the following statement on Facebook:
We stand with our Party Chair, Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and those who are willing to speak up about the shameful strategies attempting to weaken the democratic caucus and empower republicans who seek to divide and conquer.
Do not be fooled by Maryland’s GOP masquerading as bi-partisan moderates who, ICYMI, announced yesterday they are enthusiastically welcoming Vice President Mike Pence to their annual party dinner in June. There’s nothing moderate about perpetuating the Trump administrations toxic, racist, sexist, xenophobic, islamaphobic, homophobic, transphobic rhetoric to our state.
“Republicans in the Maryland House of Delegates have reportedly offered to cast their 42 votes in support of a Democratic candidate for Speaker who is unlikely to win the majority vote of the Democratic Caucus. While Republicans are free to cast their votes as they so choose, it would be unacceptable for a Democratic candidate to assume the Speaker’s position in this manner.”
Here is that post:
I have to say I was a little surprised by this statement. On the other hand…Cummings was the keynote speaker at the Howard County Democratic Central Committee Unity Dinner last night…so maybe I should not be surprised.
There has been a decent amount of coverage on this topic:

- Political Activist Pens Open Letter to Del. Eric Bromwell

One thing is clear to me…there is a split in the party when it comes to who the next Speaker will be in Annapolis. This will all be decided next week…but the fallout over all of this may go on for some time.
