After my article yesterday (The House voted 93-43 to join the Senate in overriding Hogan’s veto on Community Control of School Calendars Act) there have been questions about the school start date in Howard County for the 2019 – 2020 school year. I can confirm that per the HCPSS website (right now) the schools are scheduled start after Labor Day on September 3, 2019. HERE is the current calendar for 2019 – 2020 school year.

The new legislation that was passed “Community Control of School Calendars Act” does not go into effect until July 1, 2019. Not sure if that changes anything…just thought worth noting.

I reached out to members of the Howard County Board of Education for school start date confirmation and was told (by a few of the members) that the board has not discussed the matter since the veto override and that they (the ones that responded to me) could not confirm if changes would or would not happen to the 2019-2020 calendar.

So the best advise I can give you is watch this closely (those with kids in school) just in case it does change. I would expect (or at least hope) that we will get an announcement from the Board and school system in the VERY near future.
