I recently attended meeting (on March 21, 2019) on an update on Downtown Columbia, hosted by Downtown Columbia Partnership Executive Director Phillip Dodge and featuring a presentation by Greg Fitchitt, President, Columbia, The Howard Hughes Corporation. The meeting was held at the Howard Hughes offices, 10480 Little Patuxent Parkway, Suite 400 in Columbia Maryland.
There were a dozen or so people in attendance for this meeting including one member of the Board of Education, one member of the County Council and members from various organizations and entities around Howard County.
The event was held in the morning with a Continental Breakfast from Renata’s Tasty Bites…they provide great food and they are local (super close to where I live in Columbia).
There were two presentations and the opportunity to ask questions during those presentations. Here are both presentations:

Now I do not have the text to go along with these slides…but the slides will provide you some useful information on the progress made and the plans for downtown Columbia going forward.
There was mention of a number of upcoming events happening in downtown Columbia:
- Various 5K and 10K races (learn more)
- Books in Bloom (learn more)
- and other upcoming events (learn more)
You can see from the slides there was a lot of information on what has happened so far and what is planned for the future.
I was able to ask questions on the following topics:
- Concerns about noise from Merriweather Post Pavilion given the location of some of the planned residential units
- Concerns about traffic around the mall and downtown Columbia…questions about the “Traffic Impact Studies”…and parking for various new construction buildings
- Questions about the impact on schools the 6,000+ new units are expected to have
- And various other questions I had during the meeting.
Many people are interested about what is happening with downtown Columbia and the impact it will play on that area and Howard County. Many see this development as positive…others see it as not so positive.
I was glad I was able to attend and get an opportunity to see where they are and where everything is headed. If I had one wish…I wish DTC would put the slides (and similar information) on their website for us to obtain and read in the future…maybe information in the NEWS section that included regular updates like the slides in this post. Just my suggestion for the day.
What are your thoughts on the development happening in downtown Columbia? Let me know in the comments.
I was able to snap a few photos prior to the meeting…you can view them on Facebook HERE.
