I thought it would be fun to take a look at the finance reports for our elected officials in the Maryland State Senate that are part of the Howard County Delegation…it was something I did throughout the last election cycle and thought I would continue reporting this information going forward.

Prior to the reports released on January 16th (what I am reporting on here) the last report was the 11/20/2018 Post-General Gubernatorial report.

Here is the summary information for all council members:

Comments:

  • Guzzone has the most money of these elected officials…and in a big way.
  • Guzzone picked up the most money since November.
  • Hester spent the most money since November.

Here are some interesting items on the reports by candidates (things I look for are significant contribution amounts, PAC money, campaign transfers, significant outstanding loans & unpaid bill balances and other items that might catch my eye on a report).

Katie Hester (D9):

  • No individual contributions over $1,000
  • Picked up some cash from other campaigns:
    • Miller, Mike Marylanders For – $1,000
    • Zucker, Craig Friends Of – $500
  • Picked up money from Maryland Party Central Committees
    • Democratic Senate Caucus Committee, Maryland – $10,000
  • Picked up some PAC money from Maryland ($1,800)
    • 01/08/2019 Association Of Maryland Pilots Political Action Committee, T – $250.00
    • 01/08/2019 Associaton For Justice PAC, The Maryland – $500.00
    • 01/04/2019 Bankers PAC, MD – $100.00
    • 01/08/2019 Hospital Association PAC, Maryland – $100.00
    • 01/08/2019 Howard County Professional Firefighters PAC – $250.00
    • 01/04/2019 Licensed Beverage Association PAC , Maryland State – $100.00
    • 01/04/2019 Medical Mutual PAC – $250.00
    • 01/08/2019 MSEA’s Fund For Children And Public Education PAC – $250.00
  • Picked up some in-kind contributions:
    • MSEA’s Fund For Children And Public Education PAC – $500

Comments:

Nothing big that stands out on the report for State Senator Hester. Nearly half of the incoming money was from the Democratic Senate Caucus Committee…a little more than $2000 from PACs (between transfers and in-kind contributions). Not a big balance at the moment but has proven she can raise funds in an election cycle.

Clarence Lam (D12):

  • No individual contributions over $1,000
  • Outstanding Loan Balance – $22,646.29
  • Outstanding Bills Due – $3,098.17

Comments:

A pretty light report for State Senator Lam. I guess the thing that stands out is the more than $25,000 in outstanding loan balance and unpaid bills.

Guy Guzzone (D13):

  • Contributions over $1,000 include:
    • AFSCME Maryland Council 3 – $1,000

Comments:

This was the BIG report in this post…lots of money coming in and a bit of money going out. The question I have is this: Many seem to care about developer money at the local level…does it matter when it comes to State Senators and State Delegates taking that money? What about elected officials taking PAC money…do we care?  I know how I feel about it…but what about you?

If you want to dig through other campaign finance reports, visit: https://campaignfinancemd.us/Public/ViewFiledReports?theme=vista and search each elected official to get their reports.

I will be breaking down additional reports (Delegates by district) in the near future.

Stay tuned.
