Mailers have been featured a couple of times now in recent posts…and here is another one. I have never been a big fan of attack ads or attack mailers…and here is one that was recently sent to me that I am not a fan of at all:

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) sent out the following mailer attacking Jessica Feldmark in the Maryland State Delegate District 12 race. Here is that mailer:

I had no idea who the RSLC was…so I went and looked them up…this is what I learned via their website:

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) is the largest caucus of Republican state leaders in the country and the only national organization whose mission is to elect Republicans to multiple down-ballot, state-level offices. Since 2002, the RSLC has been working to elect candidates to the offices of lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state legislator, the judiciary and other down ticket races. The RSLC has nearly 200,000 donors in all 50 states. The RSLC invested a record $40 million into state-level races in the 2015-2016 election cycle, which ended with state-level Republicans in their strongest position in nearly 100 years. In 2016, state-level Republicans maintained a record 69 of 99 legislative chamber majorities in red, purple and blue states, held 31 lieutenant governor seats, and grew to 31 secretaries of state. Over the last three election cycles, the RSLC expanded its Future Majority Project and Right Women, Right Now initiatives, spending more than $18 million to elect 98 new Republicans of diverse descent, as well as 386 new women candidates. Since its founding in 2014, the RSLC’s Judicial Fairness Initiative has successfully supported conservative justices in Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Arkansas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The RSLC also launched the new top-level domain for the Republican Party, ‘.gop.’

I highly dislike this mailer for the following reasons:

  1. Why attack Jessica Feldmark in this attack mailer and not the other members of her “team” (note – they did mention the team…but not by name). Seems like they are targeting the new candidate…and maybe afraid to mention the other candidates on Team 12 (Eric Ebersole and Terri Hill).
  2. To my knowledge…they are not promoting the GOP candidates in this race (Melanie Harris, Bob Cockey and Michael Russell). Maybe they have mailers out there in support of them from this organization (but no one has sent that to me yet). I checked the website and social media accounts of the RSLC…and no mentions of the GOP candidates in district 12.
  3. Does the RSLC honestly believe that this ad is going to change the minds of voters in district 12? I would think voters would see this…see who it is from…and put this mailer right where it belongs…in the trash.

I reached out to Jessica Feldmark for a comment about the mailer….this is what she sent me:

This attack ad is a hollow attempt by a national Republican operation mailing hit pieces on local Democratic candidates. It’s the same generic fearmongering they’re sending out about Democratic candidates in other districts around the state. It’s disappointing to see the Republican Party engaging in these tactics here in Maryland. If I’m going to be on someone’s hit list, though, the list of a group funded by the Koch brothers, the NRA, Amway, and the Judicial Confirmation Network seems like the right hit list for me.

I’ve run a positive campaign so far, and that’s what I plan to continue through these final few weeks. I have plenty to be positive about – experience, endorsements, priorities – so there’s no need to change course.

I am very curious what the GOP candidates in this race think of this mailer…and if they believe in this type of targeting of candidates…even ones in the opposing party…is appropriate during an election season? Obviously none of them had anything to do with this mailer…but do they support this type of attacks from outside national groups (on either side)?

My hope is that Jessica Feldmark takes this mailer and turns it into a positive…my advice…reach out to your supporters, let them know the GOP is so scared of you that they are doing this and then ask for a donation so your team can hit back with a positive message for residents in district 12. Clarence Lam recently did something like that with the recent GOP polling data:

This is not the first set of attack mailers I have seen this election season…I have written about past attack mailers: MSEA mailer against Janet Siddiqui. I am betting more will be coming between now and November 6th…I am hoping not…but will be surprised if I don’t hear about more out there around the county.

Don’t buy into these mailers…do your research and vote for the best candidate…and do what I do when I get these mailers…put them in the trash and ignore them all together (but first take a pic of the mailer and send it to me at lscottewart@me.com…you never know…I might write it up in a future article).
