I am at a complete loss for words at this announcement…Valerie Ervin has decided to drop out of the race for Governor in Maryland…here is information from the Washington Post:

Valerie Ervin is dropping out of the Maryland governor’s race and endorsing Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, who is locked in a tight Democratic primary contest with former NAACP chief Ben Jealous.

I am in total shock at this announcement. Ervin entered the race…fought to get her name and the name of her running mate on the ballot (that did not go well for her) and now has dropped out of the race just days before early voting begin. Not only that…but has decided to endorse County Executive Baker…which is fine…but is so odd and I am just shocked. Ervin was not going to win (that was pretty obvious to everyone from the beginning)…so what was this whole thing about?
Who this helps:
Rushurn Baker – that is obvious. Her endorsement of his campaign will only help him going forward.
Krish Vignarajah – She is back to being the only woman in this race and this could provide a bump with Ervin out of the race.
Rich Madaleno – seems to have a lot of support around Baltimore and Ervin dropping out may increase his support in that region.
Who this hurts:
Ben Jealous – It is obvious that the “establishment” is against him and I expect this to continue through the 26th.
I am not sure what else to say…except this is so odd.
