Ok…this is not BREAKING news of any type…we all knew that Opel Jones was running for Howard County Council in District 2…but I still felt like this was worth reporting this morning. On August 25th, Opel Jones finally filed his paperwork making it official that he is running in District 2. He released this press announcement as well:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Opel Jones, Candidate for County Council
Councilmanic District 2, Howard County, MD
FIRST COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATE TO ANNOUNCE FOR 2018 HAS OFFICIALLY
FILED WITH THE HOWARD COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS
Columbia, MD (August 25, 2017) – The first County Council candidate to announce has officially filed with the Howard County Board of Elections. Surrounded by his wife, two sons, brother who also serves as his treasurer, mother and stepfather from Charlotte, NC, and family friends who have known him since the age of two, Opel Jones completed the necessary paperwork to run in the 2018 Maryland Gubernatorial Elections which will occur next June.
“Today is a special day; not only because I am filing for public office to serve the community, but because it is the exact day 27 years ago that my mom moved our family to this great state of Maryland. For her and my stepdad to come up from Charlotte to witness this is a blessing,” said Jones. After timing his announcement with President Barack Obama’s last day in office, January 19, 2017, Jones has set out to connect with residents in Long Reach and Oakland Mills Villages, southern Ellicott City, northern Jessup, and his very own neighbors in Elkridge. “Going to community events, knocking doors, and talking to my neighbors at the local grocery store are all excellent ways to learn from and communicate with residents as we march towards the June 26th primary. Jones added, “Community feedback further reinforces that my focus areas are aligned with what is most important to residents of District 2; education, public and personal safety, and community vibrancy.”
Opel Jones is currently 2nd Vice Chair of the Howard County Democratic Central Committee, a Human Rights Commissioner with the county appointed by former County Executive Ken Ulman, and Immediate Past President of the Howard County Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the chapter which proudly sponsors the Alpha Achievers Program serving in all 12 high schools in Howard County. Jones seeks to fill the seat held since 2006 by Dr. Calvin Ball, who is term limited, and expected to announce his own candidacy for another office in the coming months.

Opel Jones does not yet have a Primary opponent for this race. There is one Republican running at this point: John Liao.
There are other candidates that have announced they are running in 2018 for County Council that have not filed their paperwork yet. Hopefully they will get that paperwork completed sooner rather than later.
Make this a wonderful week!
