Dr Chao Wu is officially our first candidate running for Howard County Board of Education (HoCoBOE) in 2018. He filed with the State Board of Elections on August 14th. He lists a website www.chaowu.org and multiple social media channels: Facebook and Twitter.
I have a couple of other names that I have heard are considering or planning to run in 2018…but I will hold off listing them until they are ready to make official announcements. If you are running, feel free to reach out to me.
Four HoCoBOE members are up for re-election (Cynthia L. Vaillancourt, Bess Altwerger, Sandra H. French and Ananta Hejeebu). I do not know which if any or all of these four will be running in 2018. I believe some would have an easy path to re-election and it may be difficult for others.
The election for HoCoBOE in 2016 was exciting and the community was energized for change. We got many changes in the school system: Three new HoCoBOE members elected, the previous Superintendent resigns, a HoCoBOE member resigns, a new (and so far very well liked) Interim Superintendent hired.
What will the HoCoBOE races look like in 2018? I am guessing that will depend on which candidates get into the races but I have a hard time seeing it have the same energy we saw in 2016. Of course it is early and the redistricting plan could have a big impact on 2018.
Stay tuned…as I hear about other candidates announcing…I will be sure to keep you informed.
