It has been a while since I provided an update on HB 1299 (Howard County Board of Education – Elected School Board Ho. Co. 11-17) so I though I would take a look at the progress to date…
On March 17th, the House passed this bill by a vote of 137 – 1 – 2 (yea – nay – not voting). Here is a breakdown of the votes:
One “no” vote – from Delegate Pendergrass. She was in favor of the original bill but is not a fan of the changes that moved the bill forward. You can read more about that HERE. Although I am not thrilled she voted no, I understand it given her pervious statement on this bill.
Two delegates did not vote…what is interesting is that Delegate Flanagan was one of the two not voting. He was opposed to the original bill language and even opposed to the changes that made this bill move forward. I wonder why he skipped out on voting on this bill? Was he not in attendance that day? Was this a political move to not support it but not be on record opposing it? If I find out the an answer…I will be sure to update this post.
What is next? A hearing for the bill is scheduled for the Senate tomorrow (View full details here). The last day of the General Assembly is April 10th…so hopefully this gets done before the 2017 session ends.
Stay tuned for more information.
