In what was a very well attended event yesterday afternoon at AIDA Bistro & Wine Bar, Opel Jones officially announced his candidacy for Howard County Council – District 2. If you don’t know Opel Jones, here is a little bit about him (from his website bio):

Opel is a seasoned higher education administrator and lecturer of mathematics. He currently engages with students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors in living learning communities and is focused on enhancing the diversity and success of students in STEM at The University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Dedicated to the community, Opel mentors, tutors, and volunteers in his free time through his fraternity, as well as with the Howard County Democratic Party.  He is 2nd Vice President of the Howard County Democratic Central Committee, member of the Columbia Democratic Club, Thurgood Marshall Democratic Club, and the Howard County Chapter of the NAACP.  Additionally, he is a Human Rights Commissioner for Howard County, appointed by then County Executive, Ken Ulman.

Throughout the years, Opel has worked as a systems/software engineer, mathematics lecturer and development officer, and a computer scientist, at Lockheed Martin, Hampton University, Bowie State University, and the United States Census Bureau. He also served as Director of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute for several years while at Hampton teaching leadership studies and developing leaders, all the while teaching mathematics and honors seminars.

Opel graduated high school in Prince George’s County, received the B.S. in mathematics from Hampton University, the M.S. in mathematics from Howard University, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in mathematics also at Howard University. He is a proud Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., initiated at Hampton University, and past president of the local Howard County chapter.  His professional associations include the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the National Association of Mathematicians.  Opel loves music, football, Sudoku, and studies martial arts as he is a black belt in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu karate and a certified judge with the United States National Karate-Do Federation.  He and his wife, Shaundra, are extremely proud parents of two boys, Opel II, and Ivan.

There were some big names at the event including: Guy Guzzone, Calvin Ball and Jon Weinstein just to name a few of the current elected officials that were in attendance. There were many others in attendance that the community would know well (and I am betting that we will be seeing future “special announcements” from two or three others somewhere down the line in this election cycle). There was a photographer at the event last night and I expect MANY photos on either the website or his social media channels in the near future.

As far as online outreach (because y’all just know I am going to be following this stuff closely), Opel already has a website, and three social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) setup for the campaign. Here are those links:

Website: http://www.opeljones.com/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FriendsOfOpelJones/

Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/opeljones

Instagram: https://instagram.com/opeljones

Just as an FYI….Spartan Considerations predicted Opel Jones getting into the race earlier this month. Of course the question now is, will someone oppose him in the Primary? We have lots of time to wait and see.

I wish Opel lots of luck and success…he is starting very early and it will be a long campaign…I will be watching.
