I have not done a full evaluation of this race since all the way back in January. Congressman Harris won the GOP Primary easily and Joe Werner won the Dem Primary (which was a little bit of a shocker…at least to me). This is shaping up to be a potential easy re-election for Harris. Let us all take a look at where things sit today with candidates online outreach:

(R) Andy Harris: http://www.andyharris.com/
(L) Matt Beers: http://www.beersforcongress.com/
The Scorecard: (Click the follower numbers below to view the social media page)
- Harris – Holds significant advantages with online outreach in MD01. He is the only candidate using Twitter as an online outreach tool (although he has not posted to that account since February 16th).
- Werner – Has a Facebook page but it is pretty well hidden on his website (you can find the link on his “Contact Us” page if you look really hard for it).
- Beers – Has more Facebook followers than Werner. It would be nice if that link was ANYWHERE on his website. A potential big miss for his team.
I am not reporting the engagement numbers in June. Let’s be honest…this is the slow part of the campaign season and I expect numbers to be lower overall for many candidates. I will start reporting engagement numbers in August and continue updating those numbers through the General Election. In August I will start picking an online outreach leader in each race.
Of course the reality of followers, likes, and subscribers does not mean a lot when it comes down to voting in the end, but it can show trends in a campaign cycle and makes a great resource for following all of the candidates.
