Candidates – Maryland’s 2nd Congressional District – March Technology Outreach Scorecard

MD02

This is my first look and the race in MD02 (I know, I am very late in finally getting around to writing about this race). Dutch Ruppersberger is running unopposed for re-election (on the Democrat side) and I think it may be difficult for any of the five GOP candidates to get a win here but the GOP Primary may turn out to be interesting. Let us all take a look at the candidates:

Notes:

  • This is my first look at the social media outreach in this race so I do not have any tracking data to provide. It was nice to see that all of the candidates have a website (I know that sounds shocking but just read some of my other scorecards).
  • Ruppersberger has a BIG advantage in followers on Facebook and Twitter over all of the GOP candidates. This is not uncommon for incumbents.
  • On the GOP side, McDonough holds the most followers on Facebook and Morgan leads the way on Twitter. The candidate that ends up winning on the GOP side will REALLY need to step up their game during the General Election.
  • If I missed anything, please email me at lscottewart@me.com and I will update this evaluation.

A significant factor in evaluating online outreach is looking at follower engagement. In March, I am focusing my reviews on recent Twitter engagement. Want to know how i get the numbers? READ THIS. Here are the recent Twitter numbers for the candidates:

Notes:

  • Ruppersberger wins easily with recent Twitter engagement (retweets and favorites).
  • Not much activity at all from the GOP candidates on Twitter. Only two candidates had activity on Twitter over the past week. This was pretty disappointing overall.

As this is my first look, I am not going to choose outright leaders in this evaluation (although you can probably guess at who I would pick in this race right now).

Of course the reality of followers, likes, and subscribers does not mean a lot when it comes down to voting in the end, but it can show trends in a campaign cycle and makes a great resource for following all of the candidates.
